#MaterialMonday - The Movable Alphabet is one of the more advanced language materials that we offer in our classroom. The wooden box contains multiples of each letter of the alphabet. Using all of these letters, children are able to read, write, and spell words, even if they do not have the pencil control or grip strength required for handwriting. This allows the child to continue their language development without being held back by their motor skills. The Movable Alphabet can be used for creative expression as well, as the child has complete control over what they write using the letters. There are many different activties that can be done with the movable alphabet! It can be used to match beginning, ending or middle sounds, to write sentences, to spell the names of different images, and so much more! Here, Teddy is using the movable alphabet to match beginning sounds and Logan, Silas, and Atheana are using the Movable Alphabet to complete a “word ladder" composed of phonetically regular, three letter words. They have also extended upon the original lesson by writing their word ladders on paper. These word ladders contain common words read by young children. As the children read books, they will already be able to recognize and read these words, allowing them to focus on comprehending full sentences instead of the composition of each word within the sentence.
